You haven”t seen what he has accomplished

Laure MANDEVILLE – The state of quasi-civil war, which currently prevails in the US, is it the result of the fact that the country is badly split alonf partisan lines, or is it due to the fear that the Trump phenomenon might mark the beginning of a change of regime? Walter Russell MEAD. – As […]

UK Brexit: Democracy Hijacked; the country adrift.

The UK version of parliamentary democracy has its fault lines, but one of its strengths is that it offers, indeed insists upon, a measured and informed debate on issues of national importance. A basic requirement of MPs is that they act, not as delegates from their constituencies, but as representatives charged with weighing the general […]

Left and Right are having a meltdown over Russia

In this time of weird reversals, Democrats and liberals who scoffed at Mitt Romney’s 2012 assertion that Russia was our primary adversary have become so convinced of Vladimir Putin’s perfidy, they sound like the Cold Warriors of old. Meanwhile, our incoming president continues to extend the benefit of the doubt to Russia when it comes […]

THE LURE OF “POPULISM”Why the “NO”‘t the same as “Leave” or “Trump for President”

“Nobody ever loses in Italian politics; I have lost,” said Matteo Renzi, the outgoing prime minister, in reference to the habit of Italian politicians to stay in power regardless of their failures. His concession came an hour after exit polls that all but confirmed his defeat in the constitutional reform referendum. But who voted against […]

UK: The Decay of Democracy Brings Forth Monsters.

On 16th June this year, a week before the EU referendum, supporter of the ‘Remain’ campaign, was stabbed to death in her parliamentary constituency. On his first appearance before magistrates her alleged murderer was asked to confirm his name and replied simply: “Death to all traitors, freedom for Britain”. It seems that medical issues […]

Is Germany part of the West?

The only reason my German grandfather survived as a Russian prisoner of war was that he had a beautiful singing voice. He had been drafted into the Volkssturm militia in 1944, during the final phase of the war in which the Nazi party recruited most able-bodied males into the armed forces, regardless of their age. […]

Brexit one month later

R. d’Aco – One month after  the referendum, British political circles and public opinion seem to have finally overcome the shock of its unexpected results. They have now to face its political consequences.  Do you think it is possible to make an objective assessment of the task ahead? G. Sacco – The emotion with which the result has been greeted, firstly in the United Kingdom, is […]

Brexit: tanto rumore per nulla!Tutto come prima.
